Kingston, Ontario – August 20, 2026 – GreenLIB Materials Inc., a clean-technology company commercializing a modular“Refinement-as-a-Service”model for lithium-ion battery recycling, today announced a pilot project to recover high-purity graphite from end-of-life electric-vehicle battery “black mass”.The project will be developed in partnership with Ocean Partners USA, Inc. and with contracted engineering services from Kingston Process Metallurgy (KPM) and supported by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) R&D Partnership Fund. The project represents a total investment of over $438,000, including up to $100,000 through OVIN and matched by over $338,000 from GreenLIB and its partners.
Through this OVIN-supported project, GreenLIB will address one of the key barriers to graphite recovery from lithium-ion batteries. Graphite makes up 40 to 50 per cent of a lithium-ion battery by mass, yet very little is recovered today. It is typically burned for energy or sent to landfill because organic Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binders coat the graphite particles and make conventional separation difficult. GreenLIB’s proprietary “thermal-first” process decomposes these binders to restore the graphite’s natural properties, allowing it to recover through froth flotation at greater than 90 per cent recovery and 95 per cent carbon purity. The modular approach is designed to cut recycling capital and operating costs by up to 80% versus conventional methods, while keeping critical-mineral value and high-quality engineering jobs in Ontario and strengthening Canada’s domestic EV battery supply chain.
As the primary commercial partner, Ocean Partners USA Inc. will source representative black-mass feedstock for the pilot and route the recovered graphite samples to qualified buyers across its global network of recyclers, smelters and anode-material producers. Kingston Process Metallurgy will provide pilot infrastructure and metallurgical engineering needed to scale the graphite recovery circuit from laboratory validation to a fully operational pilot plant at its Kingston, Ontario facility.
