Kitchener, Ontario – September 14, 2026 – CarbonLume Inc., an Ontario-based clean technology company developing the next generation of low carbon battery materials, today announced the launch of its “Sustainable Light Grown Nanotubes for Next-Gen EV Batteries” project in collaboration with primary industry partner Nanorial Technologies Ltd., an Oakville, based advanced materials company. The project is supported by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) R&D Partnership Fund, and represents a total project value of $300,000, including $100,000 from the Province of Ontario and $200,000 from CarbonLume and Nanorial Technologies. The funding will enable CarbonLume to validate and scale its technology in Ontario to produce battery-grade multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for electric vehicle (EV) lithium-ion batteries.
Carbon nanotubes are a critical conductive additive that enables higher-energy-density, faster-charging, and longer-lasting EV batteries, but adoption has been constrained by the high cost, energy intensity, and overseas concentration of today’s CNT supply. Conventional chemical vapour deposition (CVD) consumes roughly 15–20 kWh of energy per kilogram of CNT produced and operates at 600–1,200 °C. CarbonLume’s patented photocatalytic technology converts methane into high-purity CNTs and clean hydrogen at near-ambient temperatures using LED arrays, offering a lower-energy approach to producing critical battery materials. With this OVIN supported project, CarbonLume will advance battery-grade production and validation in Ontario, helping strengthen the province’s EV battery supply chain, support commercialization, and lay the foundation for the company’s first commercial manufacturing hub in the province. The project is also expected to support the creation of 5 to 8 new high-skilled Ontario jobs in engineering, manufacturing, QA/QC, supply chain, and sales.
As the primary industry partner, Nanorial Technologies Ltd. will lead application-driven validation of CarbonLume’s CNTs in lithium-ion battery dispersions and electrodes. Nanorial brings world-class expertise in CNT dispersions and conductive additives, with production capacity scaling toward multi-thousand-tonne CNT formulation lines and active programs with global lithium-ion battery manufacturers and elastomer applications in North America, Japan, Korea, and Asia. Throughout the project, Nanorial will define application-specific CNT specifications, formulate dispersions, fabricate and test EV-relevant battery cells, and benchmark CarbonLume CNTs against incumbent industrial materials, helping position Ontario-made battery materials for future supply opportunities and commercialization.
