August 1, 2023 – We’re proud to announce a crucial breakthrough in the adoption of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and autonomous mobile equipment. Supported by the Ontario Government through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), Cyberworks has successfully developed novel technology that addresses AMR failures, leading to the transformation of the autonomous vehicle (AV) landscape.

“Through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network, our government is proud to play an important role in the development and deployment of made-in-Ontario, autonomous vehicle technologies and solutions,” said Minister Victor Fedeli. “Cyberworks Robotics innovative application of AV technology demonstrates how our province’s world-class workforce and R&D are being used to eliminate challenges facing small and medium-sized businesses across various sectors.”

Cyberworks has successfully deployed autonomous material handling tow tugs in partnership with Fernlea Flowers Ltd., a major Canadian greenhouse. In one application, 18 tow-tugs each pulled six trolleys loaded with plants around a greenhouse facility, between the loading dock and growing areas inside the greenhouse, and outdoors. This deployment validated Cyberworks’ technology and eliminated AV challenges in greenhouse environments, such as constant changes in the visual landscape.

“Our government is focused on strengthening Ontario’s position as a global leader in the automotive sector,” said Ontario Ministry of Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria. “By investing in technology developed by Cyberworks Robotics, we’re another step closer to revolutionizing the autonomous vehicle landscape and securing a better future for Ontario.”

“Thanks to our partnership with Cyberworks, our automated tugger system has revolutionized the way we operate in greenhouses,” said Richard Fox, Process Automation Manager at Fernlea. “We’ve significantly lightened the physical load on our team members, dramatically reducing daily walking distances by tens of kilometers daily. Now, we efficiently transport loaded racks to various locations and streamline the entire process, making our greenhouse operations more productive and less physically demanding.”

“Cyberworks’ novel application of AV technology into the agri-food industry is yet another example of Ontario-based companies leveraging next-generation innovation to address real-world challenges,” said Raed Kadri, Head of OVIN. “We’re proud to support forward-thinking innovators on their journey from technology development to commercialization and contribute to Ontario’s thriving innovation ecosystem.”
