Ontario Government Building New Pathways to Careers in theAutomotive and Mobility Sector

Led by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), the Pathways to Possibility Pilot Program has engaged over 950 participants, unlocking pathways to careers in automotive and mobility through mentorship, networking, and interactive workshops with industry.

(Toronto, ON – July 2, 2025) – The Pathways to Possibility (P2P) pilot program, an initiative supported by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) and funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) is advancing inclusive career pathways through impactful workforce development initiatives tailored to Ontario’s growing automotive and mobility sector. With a total investment of $500,000, the pilot program engaged over 950 participants, including more than 665 individuals from underrepresented groups. Through career education, mentorship, networking and job search support, P2P empowers underrepresented communities to explore and pursue meaningful careers in a rapidly evolving industry.

“Pathways to Possibility is helping more Ontarians today, prepare for the jobs of tomorrow,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “That’s why our government is proud to partner with dedicated community partners across the province to support this program in equipping workers with the skills, training, and confidence they need to build successful careers in Ontario’s growing automotive and mobility sector.”

Through this pilot, three Ontario non-profit organizations, in partnership with industry leaders, engaged a broad audience of adults and parents of youth. Their programming focused on increasing awareness of available career paths, facilitating connections with employers, and supporting informed decision-making about future opportunities in the sector. Activities included speed networking with industry professionals, mentorship programs, fireside chats and panel discussions with industry leaders, and interactive workshops.

As Ontario continues to lead in next-generation automotive and mobility innovation including autonomy, connectivity, electrification, and smart mobility, it is essential that workforce development efforts evolve in parallel. Pathways to Possibility plays a key role in this shift, ensuring that communities across the province are equipped to participate in and benefit from the growth of the sector.

With demand for skilled talent on the rise, this pilot initiative also addresses critical gaps in representation and access. Women currently represent approximately 23% of the automotive manufacturing workforce in Canada, and 60% of Ontario employers report difficulty filling skilled roles. By providing early exposure and direct industry connections, Pathways to Possibility helps bridge these gaps and supports the development of a more inclusive, future-ready workforce.

“Ontario’s greatest strength is its talent-a highly skilled workforce with boundless potential to fuel the future of the automotive and mobility sector,” said Raed Kadri, Head of OVIN. “Pathways to Possibility is pivotal to Ontario’s leadership in building a more inclusive workforce by connecting talent from underrepresented communities to critical tools, mentorship, and networks they need to thrive, ensuring that Ontario continues to lead the world in fostering innovation and creating good-paying jobs in the auto sector.”

The P2P pilot program was delivered by three non-profit and community-based organizations, each partnering with industry to create impactful, experience-based learning opportunities:

  • 7th Bridge, partnering with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Canada Aerospace and Automobility Enterprise
  • Empowering Auto, partnering with Hyundai Auto Canada Corp., Mazda Canada Inc., Janzen Leadership,  Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA), Bond Brand Loyalty, and LeedHR
  • Dream Legacy Foundation, partnering with Kiwi Charge

“Pathways to Possibility demonstrates the power of targeted, community-driven programs to drive meaningful change,” said Claudia Krywiak, President and CEO, Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). “By working alongside non-profit leaders and industry, we are not only opening doors for individuals — we’re strengthening Ontario’s talent pipeline and supporting the long-term competitiveness of our innovation economy. This is about building a system where opportunity is equitable, workforce development is strategic, and no one is left behind.”
